In 1984, Auckland university lecturer and playwright Mervyn Thompson was kidnapped, beaten and chained to a tree by six women who accused him of being a rapist. Thompson was never charged with rape, and to this day his kidnappers have never been identified.
The event triggered debates about gender politics and vigilante justice that divided New Zealand and led to social change. But the mysteries of who the six women were and why they attacked the man they did have remained unsolved.
Three decades later, Six Angry Women reopens a cold-case and tries to find out not only who the women were, but what drove them to such an unprecedented action.
Using unseen archive and interviews with key players, many of whom have not spoken before, this feature documentary reveals the story behind one of the most sensational headlines of the 80s.
